Architect Turns Old Cement Factory Into An Astonishing Home
One of the greatest living architects, Ricardo Bofill has created a home unlike any other on earth. An early 20th-century cement factory in Catalonia, Spain is the site of this architectural marvel.
In the early 1970s, Mr. Bofill found this derelict factory to be an ideal site for a unique dwelling. Changing an old abandoned factory into a liveable space required time - lots of it. The home continues to be under continuous development, part of Bofill’s creative process as an architect.
Named La fabrica, the home features a variety of outdoor spaces that include elements of the old factory. Bovill and his team made greenery integral to the outdoor spaces in order to negate the raw industrial feel. Much of the roof is covered in grass and walls are covered with vines and eucalyptus.
Bofill made an effort to keep the character of the original factory in place, keeping original equipment where possible and integrating it into the design of spaces and rooms. Large walls were replaced with windows, and the entire complex is filled with light.
When construction began almost 50 years ago, it took a year to make it suitable for habitation. Bofill used exclusively Catalonian craftsmen and filled the place with art and huge sculptures.
Bofill is an architect that was, and is, ahead of his time. Taking industrial spaces and turning them into a beautiful, green, and liveable home is something you cannot miss.
